Wike Strengthens Control Over Rivers as PDP Postpones NEC Meeting

The internal power struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has shifted in favor of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as his loyalists in the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) have secured approval for congresses held in Rivers State. This development further solidifies Wike’s influence within the party, particularly in his home state.

The NWC also postponed the highly anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was originally set for September 26, to October 24. The postponement is seen as a strategic victory for Wike, as it delays any possible reversal of the NWC’s decision on the Rivers congresses.

According to sources within the party, Wike’s faction has successfully thwarted attempts by the PDP governors, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, to challenge the Rivers congresses. “Wike has again defeated the PDP governors as the NWC approved the Rivers and other states’ congresses. There was nothing a few NWC members who were against it could do other than allow them to have their way. As it stands, only the NEC can overturn it to suit the governors’ demands,” a source revealed.

The NWC’s decision also extends to other states’ congresses, though it has stepped down approvals for some states where anomalies were identified. For example, in Kogi State, the Chairman and Deputy were not approved due to irregularities.

This latest development represents a significant blow to the PDP Governors Forum, which had sought to counter Wike’s growing influence within the party. With the NEC meeting now delayed, it remains uncertain whether the governors can muster enough support to overturn the NWC’s decision when the meeting eventually takes place.

As Wike continues to consolidate power, the internal rift within the PDP seems poised to deepen, raising questions about the party’s unity and future direction ahead of upcoming elections.
