The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture of five out of twelve inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, following an early-morning security breach on Monday, March 24, 2024.
How the Jailbreak Happened
According to Abubakar Umar, NCoS Public Relations Officer, the inmates manipulated padlocks in a section of the facility, enabling their escape. The incident triggered an immediate response from security agencies, including the Office of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Kogi State Governor, to secure the facility and launch a manhunt.
Government Reacts: Probe Ordered, Biometrics Deployed
The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the jailbreak as “unfortunate” and ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. He assured the public that the NCoS is leveraging biometric tracking and advanced technology to recapture the remaining fugitives.
- Acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has been directed to visit the facility for an on-the-spot assessment.
- A nationwide security audit of all correctional centers has been initiated to prevent future breaches.
Escapees Were Awaiting Trial; Officer Killed
Umar disclosed that all escapees were awaiting trial inmates (ATIs), and confirmed that one officer lost his life during the incident.
“We are already working to capture the remaining inmates on the run. All search mechanisms have been activated,” he stated.
Public Urged to Assist in Recapture Efforts
The NCoS has called on citizens to:
✔ Remain calm but vigilant.
✔ Report suspicious persons to security agencies.
✔ Provide useful information to aid the manhunt.
Why This Matters
This jailbreak highlights ongoing security vulnerabilities in Nigerian correctional facilities, despite recent upgrades. With seven inmates still at large, concerns remain over potential risks to public safety.
