Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which officially opens today, Monday, September 22, and runs through Sunday, September 28, 2025.
The high-level week of the UNGA will bring together world leaders, diplomats, and global stakeholders to deliberate on pressing international issues, including climate change, global security, economic development, and multilateral cooperation.

As Nigeria’s head of delegation, Vice President Shettima is expected to deliver the country’s national statement during the General Debate, outlining Nigeria’s positions on global matters and reaffirming its commitment to international cooperation and sustainable development.
In addition to addressing the General Assembly, Vice President Shettima will participate in several high-level meetings and side events on the margins of the summit. These include roundtables on global peace and security, food systems transformation, and economic resilience in Africa.

A major highlight of the Vice President’s agenda will be his announcement of Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement during the UN’s special climate event. The updated NDCs reflect Nigeria’s renewed climate action commitments and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while fostering green economic growth.
Vice President Shettima’s participation at the 80th UNGA reinforces Nigeria’s active engagement in global governance and its leadership role in promoting peace, development, and environmental sustainability across Africa and the world.
Further updates on his engagements and bilateral meetings are expected as the General Assembly progresses throughout the week.
