NDLEA Unveils Sniffer Dog Facility in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – September 27, 2025

In a major step forward in Nigeria’s fight against illicit drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commissioned a state-of-the-art canine complex in Lagos, donated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Friday, was attended by top officials from both Nigeria and Germany. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), expressed deep appreciation to the German government for its consistent support to the agency.

Marwa noted that the sniffer dogs provided under the partnership have been crucial in bolstering the agency’s operational capacity. He disclosed that since their deployment, the dogs have contributed to the seizure of over 17.932 metric tonnes of various illicit drugs, reinforcing the importance of canine units in modern drug law enforcement.
“This canine complex is not just a facility; it’s a symbol of our enduring partnership with the German government,” Marwa said. “The support we’ve received has directly strengthened our ability to intercept drug traffickers and dismantle their operations across Nigeria.”

Also speaking at the event, the German Consul General in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Krull, highlighted the shared benefits of Nigeria’s successes in curbing drug trafficking. He noted that NDLEA’s strengthened operations contribute not only to national safety but also to global security, including in Germany.
“The success of NDLEA’s work is keeping Nigeria safer, and that in itself is of immense benefit to Germany and the international community,” Krull stated.
The newly commissioned canine facility is a major upgrade that will support the training, housing, and operational deployment of sniffer dogs across NDLEA commands nationwide. It marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and Germany in the area of drug control and security cooperation.

This development comes at a time when Nigeria continues to intensify its fight against drug trafficking, substance abuse, and transnational organized crime. The NDLEA has been recognized both regionally and internationally for its renewed momentum under Marwa’s leadership, with numerous high-profile seizures and arrests recorded in recent years.
The commissioning of the dog facility signals a strengthened resolve to modernize NDLEA operations and reinforce international partnerships in the collective battle against drug-related crimes.
