East London, Eastern Cape  October 1, 2025

In a landmark ruling today, the East London Magistrate’s Court found Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), guilty of discharging a firearm during the party’s 5th anniversary celebration in 2018. The verdict concludes a high-profile case that has captivated national attention since the incident.

The incident in question took place at a public event marking the EFF’s milestone anniversary, where Malema allegedly discharged a firearm in a manner that sparked controversy and legal scrutiny. After a thorough trial, the court determined that Malema’s actions were unlawful.
Conversely, Adriaan Snyman, Malema’s former bodyguard, was acquitted of all charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The court found insufficient evidence to convict Snyman, clearing him of all allegations.

This ruling marks a significant moment for South African politics and the judiciary system, highlighting the seriousness with which firearm laws are enforced regardless of political stature. The EFF leader’s conviction has sparked varied reactions across the political spectrum and from the public, with debates ongoing about the implications for political conduct and accountability in South Africa.
The case will undoubtedly influence the discourse on the use of firearms at political events and the responsibilities of public figures in maintaining legal and ethical standards.

Further updates on sentencing and potential appeals are expected as the legal process continues.
