755 Households Affected by Flood in Potiskum, Yobe State Receive Food Items and Dignity Kits

Potiskum, Yobe State October 3, 2025

In continued efforts to support communities devastated by recent flooding in Potiskum Local Government Area, the Yobe State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in partnership with CARE Nigeria, has commenced the distribution of critical relief materials to affected households.
A total of 755 households drawn from 13 communities across five wards have benefited from the latest round of humanitarian support, which includes food baskets and dignity kits. The items, valued at over ₦100 million, are part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s broader commitment to mobilize resources for communities in distress.
Each household received:

• 50kg of rice
• 25kg of beans
• 5 litres of vegetable oil
• Salt

In addition, 125 female-headed households were provided with dignity kits, specially designed to support the health, hygiene, and dignity of women and girls during crisis situations.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Goje Mohammed, reiterated the agency’s resolve to ensure no affected community is left behind.

“This intervention is not just about providing food. It is about restoring hope, dignity, and resilience to families grappling with the aftermath of flooding,” Dr. Goje stated. “We encourage all beneficiaries to use the support items for the well-being of their households.”
He commended the collaboration with CARE Nigeria, noting that public-private partnerships remain essential in strengthening the state’s disaster response and recovery capabilities.

The distribution is part of a broader humanitarian response strategy led by SEMA, combining emergency food relief, non-food support, and resilience-building efforts. These initiatives are designed to help affected communities stabilize and recover quickly from the socio-economic impacts of natural disasters.
Yobe State has continued to experience seasonal flooding, disrupting livelihoods and displacing families, especially in vulnerable rural areas. The state government has ramped up interventions in health, shelter, and food security to cushion the effects and rebuild communities.
