Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has organized a 20th Memorial Service in honour of his late wife and former First Lady, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, who passed away twenty years ago in 2005.

The commemorative event took place on Saturday at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The solemn service was attended by members of the Obasanjo family, friends, political associates, dignitaries, and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the late First Lady.
In his remarks, former President Obasanjo paid glowing tribute to his late wife, describing her as “a woman of virtue, compassion, and deep commitment to service.”


“It’s been twenty years since Stella left us, but her impact and legacy remain evergreen. She lived for others, she served with passion, and she loved this country deeply,” Obasanjo said.


The memorial service featured prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and tributes from family members, close friends, and religious leaders. The officiating minister praised Mrs. Obasanjo’s selfless contributions to humanity and her enduring influence on women’s empowerment and public service.
“Mrs. Stella Obasanjo was not just a First Lady by title, but by action and heart. She championed causes that improved lives, especially those of women and children,” the cleric said during his sermon.


Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s First Lady from 1999 to 2005, was widely recognized for her humanitarian efforts and advocacy in health and social welfare. Through her Child Care Trust Foundation, she spearheaded initiatives focused on child health, maternal care, and education for underprivileged children.
As part of the memorial activities, a thanksgiving service and charitable outreach were also held in her honour, reflecting her lifelong commitment to compassion and community service.


Attendees described the event as both emotional and inspiring, emphasizing that the late First Lady’s memory continues to motivate many Nigerians to live lives of purpose and service.
“Her legacy of kindness and service to humanity lives on,” Obasanjo said in closing. “Stella may be gone, but her spirit continues to shine through the many lives she touched.”
