The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Saturday as the National Working Committee (NWC) countered the suspension of key national officers, including the National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.
This comes after an emergency NWC meeting held in Abuja, following a court ruling that halted the party’s planned national convention. During the meeting, the committee announced the suspension of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Legal Adviser, and National Organizing Secretary for one month over alleged anti-party activities.
However, in a dramatic twist, the suspended National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu, reportedly convened a separate NWC meeting, during which he announced the suspension of Ambassador Damagum and five other national officers.
Party insiders say the conflicting decisions reflect deepening divisions within the PDP’s national leadership, as rival factions jostle for control ahead of crucial political realignments.
While both sides claim to be acting in accordance with the PDP constitution, the latest developments have thrown the party into uncertainty, raising concerns about its unity and readiness for future elections.
As at press time, no official statement had been issued by the party’s Board of Trustees or Governors’ Forum on the matter. Observers are calling for urgent reconciliation efforts to prevent further fragmentation within the main opposition party.
