My Joining APC Is In Bayelsa’s Interest — Governor Diri

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State | Sunday, November 3, 2025

Ahead of his formal reception into the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled for Monday, November 3, Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has stated that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was made in the best interest of the state and its people.

Speaking on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Governor Diri said that while the decision might come as a surprise to many, it was necessary for the progress and unity of Bayelsa.
“Someone had to make the decision, and I took it on behalf of Bayelsans,” he declared, addressing a large congregation of worshippers and political stakeholders.

This marks the first time the governor has publicly spoken about his political move since he officially resigned from the PDP on October 15, 2025.
Governor Diri explained that although some individuals might not immediately understand his reasons for joining the ruling APC, time would reveal that his motives were purely altruistic and rooted in the desire to ensure sustained growth and stability in the state.
He expressed satisfaction over the presence of political figures from diverse backgrounds at the thanksgiving event, emphasizing that unity across party lines was vital for Bayelsa’s advancement.

“Politics should be for development and not for bringing people down,” he stated. “My administration will continue to pursue policies that unite our people and promote development across all sectors.”

The governor also used the occasion to reflect on the peace, security, and ongoing development currently being experienced in the state, attributing these successes to divine grace. He urged Bayelsans to cultivate a spirit of gratitude, noting that thanksgiving should remain a central part of the state’s culture.
Governor Diri’s formal reception into the APC is expected to draw major political figures from across the country, marking a significant realignment in Bayelsa’s political landscape.
