National Electoral Reforms Summit Opens in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria – November 11, 2025

The National Electoral Reforms Summit has officially opened in Abuja, bringing together key stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic and electoral processes to chart a course for credible, transparent, and peaceful elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
The summit, which convenes representatives from the National Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organizations, political parties, and development partners, aims to identify and deliberate on critical constitutional and institutional reforms needed before the 2027 elections.

At the heart of the discussions is the need to engage the National Assembly and INEC in a structured reform dialogue designed to strengthen the legal and operational frameworks guiding Nigeria’s electoral system. Participants at the summit are also expected to explore innovative strategies to enhance voter participation, transparency in election management, and public trust in electoral outcomes.

One of the key objectives of the summit is the launch of a broad-based coalition for credible elections in Nigeria, bringing together citizens, political stakeholders, and civic groups under a shared vision of reform and accountability. The coalition is expected to serve as a platform for sustained advocacy, knowledge sharing, and policy engagement on electoral integrity.
Organizers emphasized that the summit seeks not only to build consensus around reform priorities but also to mobilize citizens and political actors toward a culture of transparency, peace, and respect for democratic principles. Through dialogue and evidence-based recommendations, the initiative aims to address long-standing challenges such as electoral violence, vote buying, and weak enforcement of electoral laws.

Beyond immediate reforms, the summit also underscores the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic culture through evidence-based policy research and sustained civic education. By empowering citizens with accurate information and encouraging active participation in governance, stakeholders hope to build a more resilient democracy anchored on accountability and inclusion.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the outcomes of the Abuja summit are expected to provide a roadmap for transformative electoral reforms capable of deepening democratic governance and restoring public confidence in the electoral process.
