ASUU Urges Federal Government To Faithfully Conclude Negotiations As One-Month Window Closes In
Abuja, Nigeria — November 13, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reminded the Federal Government of the one-month window granted to it to conclude ongoing negotiations aimed at addressing the lingering issues affecting the nation’s university system and averting a possible resumption of the suspended strike.
In a statement signed by the Union’s President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU reviewed the progress made since the suspension of its warning strike two weeks ago and expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s proposed salary adjustment.
According to the statement, the proposed increment falls short of expectations and is “not capable of achieving the reversal of the brain drain syndrome that has bedevilled Nigerian university education.”
While acknowledging that progress has been made in closing some gaps, particularly in the non-monetary aspects of the negotiations, ASUU emphasized that the salary structure and conditions of service remain critical to resolving the crisis in the university system.
“The union, therefore, calls on all stakeholders—especially those bodies that intervened and appealed to us to suspend the strike last month—to continue to urge the Federal Government to faithfully conclude the negotiation,” the statement read in part.
ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to engaging in constructive dialogue but warned that the patience of its members is not unlimited. The union maintained that a meaningful and sincere resolution of all outstanding issues is essential to prevent another disruption in academic activities across Nigerian universities.
