PRESIDENT TINUBU’S TRIBUTE TO CENTENARIAN ALHAJI TANKO YAKASAI
Abuja, Nigeria — December 4, 2025
Of the noble men and women who stood firm for our liberty and freedom from repressive colonial subjugation, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai remains the last man standing. Born a hundred years ago in Kano City, he exemplifies a purposeful life—one defined by courage, conviction, and an unyielding dedication to the Nigerian nation, despite humble beginnings.
Disturbed from a young age by the injustice and maltreatment he witnessed under colonial rule, Alhaji Yakasai committed himself to the struggle for Nigeria’s liberation. As a vibrant youth filled with passion for justice, Baba Yakasai channelled his energy into the emancipation of his people, serving as a freedom fighter, journalist, and frontline political activist.
His activism naturally drew him into the fold of the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), where he worked alongside comrades under the visionary leadership of Mallam Aminu Kano. Through NEPU’s bold movement, Yakasai and his colleagues launched a transformative awakening campaign across Northern Nigeria—helping to ignite and sustain the fire that ultimately fuelled the nation’s Independence struggle.
Following Nigeria’s Independence in 1960, Alhaji Yakasai’s dedication to the nation did not wane. Instead, he continued to serve with unwavering faith in the country’s potential and its future. He held key positions, including State Commissioner in Kano during the administration of Military Governor Audu Bako, and later as Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic.
From youth to old age, Alhaji Yakasai has remained a steadfast patriot. A symbol of integrity and national commitment, he has consistently championed unity, peaceful coexistence, and democratic consolidation. His voice—always measured and purposeful—has been a stabilizing force in moments of national uncertainty.
In celebrating Baba Yakasai today, we honour not just the man and his accomplishments, but also a century of devoted service to freedom, democracy, and nation-building. We honour a leader, a mentor, and a committed progressive who has, over many years, extended support to me and to the principles we both cherish.
I am pleased and deeply honoured to join his family, friends, and countless admirers in celebrating the remarkable life and enduring commitment of Alhaji Tanko Yakasai as he marks his 100th birthday on December 5.
