Governor Mbah Holds Strategic Meeting to Reposition Igbos in Nigeria’s Political Space

Amechi Awkunanu, Enugu | January 2, 2026

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has held a strategic closed-door meeting with prominent Igbo leaders to deliberate on the position of the Igbo people within Nigeria’s political arrangements.

The high-level meeting, which took place at Amechi Awkunanu in Enugu, had in attendance the former Governor of the old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, and former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, among other influential stakeholders.

As political alignments and realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the meeting is seen as part of renewed efforts by leaders in the South East to forge a united front and effectively reposition the Igbo nation in Nigeria’s political equation.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, elder statesman Senator Jim Nwobodo described the engagement as consultative and reflective, noting that it was driven by the need to end lingering ambiguity surrounding the place of the Igbos in national affairs. He stressed that the Igbo people must occupy a clearly defined and respected position within the country’s power structure.

The political leaders at the meeting emphasized the critical importance of unity, identifying internal divisions as a major factor that has historically weakened the region’s influence at the national level.

They further noted that the discussions would be broadened to include other key Igbo leaders across the country, with the aim of building consensus and ensuring that the Igbos remain relevant and strategically positioned in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
