Gada Biyu, Federal Capital Territory  Sunday, 11 January 2026

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal multiple-vehicle road traffic crash that claimed twelve lives at about 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, 11 January 2026, at Gada Biyu, along the Yangoji–Abuja (YGJ–ABJ) corridor.
In a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Segun Ogungbemide, the crash involved four vehicles: a commercial trailer conveying coal, a commercial bus, and two commercial cars.

According to the FRSC, preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was likely caused by speed violation and dangerous driving, which resulted in loss of control. Further findings indicated that the trailer driver was travelling at an excessive speed beyond the legally prescribed limit for the corridor. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into already parked vehicles, triggering the fatal collision.
A total of 18 persons were involved in the crash. Five victims died instantly at the scene, while seven others who were rescued and rushed to the hospital later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to twelve.

Three other victims sustained injuries of varying degrees, including bruises, cuts, fractures, and head injuries. They are currently receiving medical attention at nearby medical facilities.

The FRSC expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated its call on motorists, especially commercial drivers, to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent avoidable road tragedies. The Corps also warned against dangerous driving habits, noting that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
