Nigeria, Turkey Set to Expand Cooperation in Trade and Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Republic of Turkey, with renewed focus on trade, security, and strategic engagement.
This assurance was given as the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, hosted the newly appointed Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mehmet Poroy, on a courtesy visit in Abuja.

During the meeting, both parties engaged in wide-ranging discussions aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries. Key areas of focus included initiatives to boost bilateral trade and investment, enhance collaboration on regional and internal security, and promote stronger diplomatic and cultural exchanges.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with Turkey to attract foreign investment, leverage shared expertise, and strengthen institutional partnerships that support economic growth and national security. He noted that Turkey remains an important strategic partner, particularly in areas such as border management, internal security architecture, and capacity building.

Ambassador Poroy, in his remarks, expressed Turkey’s commitment to expanding its engagement with Nigeria, describing the country as a vital partner in Africa. He reaffirmed Turkey’s interest in deepening cooperation through mutually beneficial initiatives that promote stability, economic development, and people-to-people relations.
The visit underscores the growing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Turkey and reflects both nations’ shared determination to advance cooperation in line with their common interests and long-term strategic goals.
