Two More Rivers State House of Assembly Members Pull Out of Impeachment Process Against Governor Fubara

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State — January 14, 2026

Two more members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the impeachment proceedings targeting Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
The lawmakers — Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II — announced their decision on Wednesday, urging colleagues to shelve the impeachment process and seek a peaceful resolution to the lingering political crisis. Their move comes just 24 hours after two other members of the House took a similar stance.

With this latest shift, four out of the original 26 legislators who signed the impeachment notice are now distancing themselves from the effort to remove Governor Fubara. The quartet cited interventions from community leaders and stakeholders, along with appeals for calm and dialogue, as reasons for their change of heart.
Earlier in the week, Sylvanus Nwankwo, the House Minority Leader representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency also withdrew their support for the impeachment move, calling on fellow lawmakers to “temper justice with mercy” and explore alternative mechanisms to resolve the crisis.

The impeachment process, which was formally initiated last week amid accusations of constitutional breaches by the governor and his deputy, has deepened political divisions within the state legislature and heightened tensions between competing factions.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is scheduled to reconvene for plenary on January 15, 2026, where the fate of the impeachment proceedings and prospects for political dialogue are expected to be key points of discussion.
This unfolding situation highlights growing calls within the Assembly for restraint and negotiation over confrontation — an indication of shifting dynamics in the state’s political landscape.
