Day Two of INEC Leadership Workshop Focuses on Crisis Management and Communication
Abuja, January 15, 2026
Day Two of the Workshop for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Leadership on Strategic Opportunities and Challenges to Electoral Administration in Nigeria and Africa commenced with an intensive session titled “Leadership Under Pressure: Crisis, Judgement, and Communication.”
The session was facilitated by Mr. Rushdi Nackerdien, IFES Senior Global Advisor for Training and Capacity Development, alongside Mr. Seray Jah, IFES Regional Director for Africa and IFES Country Director for Nigeria. Both facilitators led in-depth discussions aimed at strengthening leadership capacity within the Commission.
The focus of the session was on equipping INEC leaders with the skills required to effectively manage electoral crises, exercise sound judgement under pressure, and deploy strategic communication during challenging electoral periods. Emphasis was placed on the critical role leadership plays in maintaining stability, credibility, and public trust throughout the electoral process.
Following the presentations, participants took part in an intensive table-top classwork exercise. Facilitators introduced realistic electoral scenarios that required participants to work in teams to analyze unfolding situations, make timely decisions, and develop appropriate response strategies under simulated pressure.
The practical and interactive nature of the exercise allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges, reinforcing skills considered essential for safeguarding electoral integrity.
The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen INEC’s institutional preparedness ahead of the 2027 General Elections, with a focus on leadership resilience, crisis response, and effective communication as key pillars for successful electoral administration.
