Sultan of Sokoto Declares Tuesday as First Day of Sha’aban 1447AH

Sokoto, Nigeria – January 20, 2026

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as the first day of Sha’aban 1447AH.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto. The declaration marks the beginning of the eighth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, a period observed by Muslims worldwide with increased acts of worship and preparation for the holy month of Ramadan.

In his statement, the Sultan urged Muslims to use the month of Sha’aban to engage in spiritual reflection, fasting, and charitable activities, emphasizing its significance as a time to strengthen one’s faith and devotion.
The declaration serves as an official guide for Islamic institutions, mosques, and the Muslim community across Nigeria in determining religious observances, including the commencement of fasting and other spiritual practices associated with Sha’aban.
