SARDAUNA MEMORIAL FOUNDATION ADVOCATES STRONGER ROLE FOR TRADITIONAL RULERS IN GOVERNANCE
Dutse, Jigawa State | January 21, 2026
The Sardauna Memorial Foundation has called for a stronger and more clearly defined role for traditional institutions in governance, particularly in the areas of effective service delivery and grassroots security.
This call was made during a courtesy visit by members of the foundation to the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Hamim Nuhu Sunusi, where the delegation emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in addressing socio-economic and security challenges across Northern Nigeria.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sardauna Memorial Foundation, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, noted that traditional rulers remain critical stakeholders in governance due to the trust, respect, and confidence they command among their people. According to him, meaningful progress in tackling insecurity, poverty, and other developmental challenges in the region cannot be achieved without their active involvement.
Dr. Aliyu explained that the visit was part of the foundation’s annual activities commemorating the anniversary of the demise of the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto. He said the foundation remains committed to preserving and promoting the ideals, leadership values, and legacies of the late Sardauna, particularly among younger generations.
In his response, the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Hamim Nuhu Sunusi, expressed appreciation to the delegation for the visit and commended the foundation for sustaining the vision and principles of Sir Ahmadu Bello. He stressed that education remains the most effective tool for addressing poverty, insecurity, and other social challenges confronting the region.
The Emir called on all stakeholders, including governments, traditional institutions, private individuals, and development partners, to complement ongoing efforts to ensure that every child has access to quality education, regardless of gender or socio-economic background. He noted that investing in education is key to building a peaceful, prosperous, and secure society.
