AL IKHLAS WAQF TRUST ORGANISES ZAKAT AND WAQF WEEK IN MAIDUGURI

The has inaugurated its annual Zakat and Waqf Week in Maiduguri, with a call for strengthened faith-based social responsibility to address poverty and promote sustainable development.
The event was officially inaugurated by Professor , wife of the Governor of , at the Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Falmata Zulum commended the Trust for its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities through structured zakat and waqf initiatives. She emphasized that institutionalizing charitable giving in line with Islamic principles remains a powerful tool for social protection, economic empowerment and community resilience.
With the theme, “Transforming the Ummah via Zakat and Waqf: A Pathway to Poverty Alleviation and Prosperity,” the week-long programme seeks to deepen awareness about the importance of zakat (obligatory almsgiving) and waqf (endowment) as sustainable instruments for addressing poverty and promoting shared prosperity within society.
The inauguration ceremony attracted a distinguished gathering, including officials of the Ikhlas Waqf Trust, representatives of the Shehu of Borno, lawmakers from the National and State Assemblies, government functionaries, Islamic scholars, jurists and beneficiaries of the Trust’s interventions.
In their remarks, speakers highlighted the need for transparency, accountability and proper management of zakat and waqf resources to ensure they effectively reach the intended beneficiaries. They also stressed the importance of collaboration between religious institutions, government agencies and the private sector to expand the impact of charitable initiatives.
The event featured presentations on the administration of waqf assets, panel discussions on Islamic social finance and testimonies from beneficiaries whose lives have been positively transformed through the Trust’s support programmes.
Organisers noted that the Zakat and Waqf Week will include outreach activities, enlightenment campaigns and support distributions aimed at empowering the less privileged and strengthening community development efforts across Borno State.
