FG DIRECTS MDAs TO STRICTLY ADHERE TO MTEF TO STRENGTHEN BUDGET CREDIBILITY AND FISCAL DISCIPLINE

Abuja, Nigeria – February 27, 2026

The Federal Government has directed Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to strictly comply with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) in a renewed push to strengthen budget credibility and entrench fiscal discipline across public institutions.
The directive was issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, , during a courtesy visit by the (FRC) in Abuja.

Akume emphasized that adherence to the MTEF is essential for building a coordinated and disciplined fiscal environment capable of supporting sustainable economic growth and national development.

According to him, the MTEF serves as a critical fiscal planning tool that aligns government expenditure with national development priorities while ensuring predictability, transparency, and long-term sustainability in the budgeting process.
“Strict compliance with the MTEF will reinforce fiscal responsibility, reduce deviations in budget implementation, and enhance public confidence in government financial management,” Akume stated.

He stressed that MDAs must operate within approved expenditure ceilings and avoid actions that could undermine fiscal stability or disrupt national economic objectives.
The SGF noted that a disciplined approach to public spending would not only improve budget credibility but also strengthen Nigeria’s macroeconomic framework by reducing fiscal leakages and promoting efficient resource allocation.

Muruako observed that the administration’s ongoing economic reforms have provided the necessary institutional backing and policy support for the Commission to effectively discharge its mandate.
He reaffirmed the FRC’s commitment to monitoring compliance with fiscal responsibility principles and collaborating with relevant government institutions to ensure transparency, accountability, and prudent financial management.

The renewed emphasis on strict MTEF compliance is widely seen as part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to stabilize public finances, improve revenue performance, and strengthen institutional mechanisms for sustainable economic growth.
