HEAVY GRIDLOCK ON GWAGWALADA BRIDGE

Abuja, Nigeria — 16 March 2026
Travellers along the Gwagwalada axis of the Abuja–Lokoja highway are currently experiencing severe traffic congestion following the closure of one lane on the Gwagwalada Bridge.
The development has forced motorists heading out of the Federal Capital Territory, as well as those travelling into Abuja from Lokoja, to spend several hours on the road due to the resulting traffic build up.
As of Monday morning, many civil servants and schoolchildren were seen trekking long distances to their offices and schools as the gridlock brought vehicular movement on the route to a near standstill.
Although the exact reason for the closure of one side of the bridge has not yet been confirmed by authorities, heavy metal structures were observed on the affected section of the bridge and are yet to be removed.
The situation has continued to cause frustration among commuters, with some travellers reportedly abandoning their vehicles to continue their journeys on foot.
Minor collisions have also been reported as a result of the congestion, while some workers and students were forced to cut their journeys short due to the prolonged delay.
