EFCC Warns Public of Impersonators Posing as Commission’s Officers
Abuja, Nigeria April 23, 2026
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alerted members of the public to a growing wave of criminal elements impersonating its officers in various parts of the country.
In a statement issued by the Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the Commission disclosed that intelligence reports indicate that fraudsters are adopting multiple deceptive tactics aimed at tarnishing the image and credibility of the EFCC.
According to the statement, one of the emerging trends involves gangs operating around popular eateries and recreational spots in major cities. These impostors reportedly ambush unsuspecting youths leaving such locations, falsely accuse them of internet fraud, and extort money and valuables from them.
The Commission further revealed that these individuals often disguise themselves as genuine EFCC operatives by wearing fake uniforms and transporting victims to locations designed to resemble official EFCC offices, thereby creating an illusion of legitimacy.
In addition, the EFCC warned of another group of criminals targeting motorists. These fraudsters reportedly harass drivers under the guise of verifying number plates, while wielding dangerous weapons to intimidate victims into surrendering money based on fabricated allegations.
The statement also drew attention to the activities of online impersonators and fraudulent content creators who stage fake EFCC operations. These individuals produce misleading videos featuring dramatized raid scenes, including broken doors and forced entries, in a bid to deceive the public and misrepresent the Commission’s operations.
The EFCC emphasized that it operates under clearly defined standard procedures in carrying out its duties and urged members of the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any individual claiming to be an officer of the Commission.
While reaffirming its commitment to combating economic and financial crimes, the Commission called on well-meaning Nigerians not to allow the actions of these impersonators to undermine public confidence in its work.
The EFCC also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, as efforts continue to safeguard the public and uphold the integrity of law enforcement operations across the country.
