Bamako, Mali — April 27, 2026
Sadio Camara, Mali’s defence minister, has been killed following a coordinated wave of attacks targeting military installations across the country.
Camara reportedly died after a vehicle-borne explosive device detonated outside his residence in Kati, a heavily fortified garrison town located about 15 kilometres northwest of Bamako, the nation’s capital. Kati is known as a strategic military hub and residence of senior junta leaders, including interim President Assimi Goita.
The attack on the minister’s residence was part of a broader, simultaneous offensive on multiple military targets, raising concerns about the scale and coordination of the assault. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, the pattern of attacks bears similarities to previous operations carried out by extremist groups active in the Sahel region.
Security sources say several military facilities were struck almost at the same time, suggesting a high level of planning and intelligence by the attackers. Casualties among security personnel have also been reported, although exact figures remain unclear as authorities continue to assess the situation.
The killing of Camara marks a significant blow to Mali’s military leadership and underscores the persistent security challenges facing the country.
Mali has been grappling with insurgency and instability for over a decade, with armed groups linked to extremist networks carrying out frequent attacks despite ongoing military operations.
Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the incident, but security has reportedly been heightened in Bamako and surrounding areas as investigations continue.
