Stakeholders push for stronger diaspora policies at Abuja meeting
Abuja, Nigeria — May 4, 2026
Key stakeholders in migration and diaspora affairs have called for stronger collaboration and coordinated policies to maximise the contributions of Nigerians living abroad.
The call was made during a high-level meeting of the Standing Committee on Diaspora Matters held in Abuja, where participants emphasised the need for more inclusive and structured engagement with the diaspora community.
Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships and strategic frameworks to better harness the economic and social potential of Nigerians overseas.
The meeting brought together government officials, international partners, and state representatives to review ongoing initiatives and identify gaps in current diaspora engagement efforts.
Participants also explored new approaches to enhance diaspora participation in national development, amid increasing recognition of the role Nigerians abroad play in investment, knowledge transfer, and global representation.
The Standing Committee on Diaspora Matters is expected to intensify efforts towards aligning policies and implementing more impactful diaspora-focused programmes nationwide.
