FG Approves 50% Train Fare Discount For Eid-el-Kabir

Abuja, Nigeria — May 26, 2026

The Federal Government has approved a 50 percent reduction in train fares across the country ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, in a move aimed at easing transportation costs for Nigerians traveling during the festive season.
The announcement was disclosed in a statement issued by Osima Gift Seddon on behalf of the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Transportation.
According to the statement, the temporary fare reduction will take effect from Tuesday, May 26, and remain in force until Monday, June 1, 2026.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, explained that the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to cushion the financial burden of transportation during the Sallah period, when demand for travel is usually at its peak.
Under the arrangement, passengers using any route operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) will pay only half of the existing approved fares throughout the duration of the offer.

The Ministry also assured passengers who had already purchased tickets before the announcement that they would not be disadvantaged. Such passengers are expected to receive rebates equivalent to 50 percent of their ticket costs, which can be applied toward future train journeys before the expiration date.

Authorities further clarified that train schedules and operational timetables would remain unchanged during the period. Passengers were advised to arrive early at train stations and comply with all travel guidelines to ensure smooth operations and avoid congestion.

The Federal Ministry of Transportation stated that the intervention reflects the government’s commitment to supporting citizens while promoting safe, affordable, and efficient rail transportation across the country during the festive season.
