ADC Names Amaechi as Atiku’s Running Mate for 2027 Presidential Election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made in a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives from the country’s geopolitical zones.

According to the ADC, Amaechi’s emergence as vice-presidential candidate was influenced by his performance in the party’s presidential primary, where he finished as runner-up, as well as his extensive experience in public service spanning both the legislative and executive arms of government.

The party described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic partnership aimed at presenting what it called a credible alternative to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election. It noted that Amaechi’s political experience, national profile, and governance record would complement Atiku’s leadership and strengthen the party’s electoral prospects.

In the statement, the ADC highlighted Amaechi’s political career, which includes serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation. The party said these experiences have equipped him with the leadership capacity required to contribute effectively to national governance.

“The proposed partnership between Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance. It is the coming together of two experienced statesmen with national reach and leadership capacity,” the party stated.

The announcement comes as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 general election, with major opposition groups seeking to consolidate support and build alliances capable of challenging the ruling party. Political observers believe the selection of Amaechi could influence political calculations across several regions of the country, particularly in the South-South and other parts of southern Nigeria.

The ADC expressed confidence that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket would strengthen its campaign structure and broaden its appeal among voters as the race toward the 2027 presidential election gathers momentum.

With the vice-presidential nomination now settled, attention is expected to shift to campaign strategies, party mobilization, and policy issues that are likely to dominate political discourse in the months leading up to the election.
