Kano Government, Chinese Companies Sign Major Contracts to Rehabilitate Tamburawa and Challawa Water Facilities

The Kano State Government, through the Ministry of Water Resources, has signed major contracts with Chinese construction companies for the rehabilitation and restoration of critical water infrastructure at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants, marking a significant step in efforts to improve access to potable water across the state.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Commissioner of the Ministry, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the projects were approved during the State Executive Council Meeting held in April 2026 and form part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration’s commitment to revitalizing essential public utilities. A total of ₦21.29 billion was allocated for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the facilities.

The approved scope of work includes the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and the restoration of its Raw Water Pump Station at a cost of ₦9.9 billion. The contract was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited, a major engineering and construction firm operating in Nigeria.

The second project covers the rehabilitation of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, as well as the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, valued at ₦11.39 billion. This contract was awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited, a Chinese construction company with operations in Nigeria.
The contract signing ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, where Dr. Hashim formally executed agreements with representatives of both CGC Nigeria Limited and CCECC Nigeria Limited. He described the projects as a “strategic intervention” aimed at strengthening water supply systems and addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges affecting millions of residents.
Dr. Hashim expressed confidence in the technical capacity of the contracting firms and urged them to ensure strict adherence to quality standards and timely delivery within the agreed eight-month completion period.
He added that the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa facilities represents a major milestone in the state government’s broader agenda to expand access to safe and reliable drinking water, improve public health outcomes, and support urban and rural development across Kano State.
Representatives of both CGC Nigeria Limited and CCECC Nigeria Limited assured the government of their commitment to delivering the projects efficiently, emphasizing their readiness to deploy technical expertise and resources to meet the expectations of the state.
The projects are expected to significantly enhance Kano’s water production and distribution capacity once completed, addressing supply shortages and improving service delivery to households and businesses across the state.
