Ikeja, Lagos State | October 4, 2025
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseyi Nafiu, on October 3, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Commander of 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Olawale Matthew Oyekola, at the Headquarters 9 Brigade, located in TA Lagbaja Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos.
The visit formed part of the DG’s maiden tour of Lagos State, during which he engaged with key stakeholders of the NYSC, including the Lagos State Government. While at the Cantonment, Brigadier General Nafiu took time to commend the visible and sustained transformation taking place under the leadership of Brigadier General Oyekola, describing it as a “testament of purposeful leadership.”
He remarked that the Cantonment continues to wear a new look with each visit, reflecting continuous improvement and a commitment to excellence. The DG expressed gratitude for the consistent support the Brigade has provided to the NYSC, especially in ensuring a safe, well-coordinated, and conducive environment for corps members deployed to Lagos.
“The standard operating procedure maintained by 9 Brigade in the deployment of its personnel during various NYSC activities is commendable, particularly considering other operational demands placed on the unit,” Brigadier General Nafiu
He also highlighted how the improved facilities and safety in TA Lagbaja Cantonment have made it a highly sought-after place of primary assignment among corps members in Lagos State.
In response, Brigadier General Oyekola thanked the DG for the visit and the recognition accorded to the Brigade. He, however, attributed the success of NYSC-related activities in the state to the strategic guidance and support from Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army, under which 9 Brigade operates.
“While 9 Brigade plays its role, the seamless and secured operations of NYSC camps in Lagos are largely due to the structured planning and coordination led by HQ 81 Division,” he emphasized.
General Oyekola also acknowledged the NYSC as a critical partner in the manpower development of the Brigade, noting that teachers, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists serving under the scheme significantly boost the Brigade’s operations and services.
He further lauded the leadership style of the DG NYSC, particularly the collaborative approach that has fostered a stronger partnership between the military and the NYSC Directorate in Lagos.
The visit was rounded off with key ceremonial moments, including the signing of the visitors’ book, exchange of souvenirs, and a group photograph to mark the occasion.
