Jet Fuel Crisis: Keyamo Meets Petroleum Ministry, Airline Operators Over Strike Threat

Abuja, Nigeria  April 23, 2026 .

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has held a crucial meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the leadership of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to address the sharp increase in the cost of Jet A1 fuel and rising tensions within the aviation industry.

The high-level engagement focused on finding urgent and sustainable solutions to the astronomical rise in aviation fuel prices, which has significantly impacted airline operations and profitability across the country.

Airline operators, under the aegis of AON, expressed deep concerns over the escalating cost of Jet A1, warning that the situation is becoming unsustainable. They further raised the possibility of shutting down operations if immediate interventions are not implemented to stabilize fuel prices and ease operational pressures.

In response, the Minister emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure stability in the aviation sector. He noted that ongoing consultations with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources are aimed at exploring practical measures to address supply challenges, improve pricing structures, and safeguard the continuity of airline services.

The meeting also underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies and industry players in navigating current challenges and preventing disruptions that could affect passengers and the broader economy.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the outcome of the discussions will lead to actionable solutions capable of averting a potential shutdown and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
