LAWMA Denies Absence, Confirms Statewide Participation in Environmental Sanitation Exercise

Lagos, Nigeria — April 27, 2026

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has refuted claims that it failed to carry out waste collection during the recent environmental sanitation exercise, describing such reports as false and misleading.

In an official statement, the agency emphasized that assertions suggesting LAWMA “did not” come to pack waste are entirely incorrect. It noted that, beyond LAWMA’s direct involvement, several Local Government Areas (LGAs) have acquired their own compactor trucks to support waste management efforts, as part of a broader strategy to decentralise sanitation operations across the state.

According to the agency, this decentralisation initiative represents a key component of Lagos State’s long-term environmental sustainability plan, enabling LGAs to take more active roles in maintaining cleanliness within their jurisdictions.
LAWMA further confirmed that all LGAs actively participated in the sanitation exercise, with operations carried out across various parts of the state. It added that intervention measures remain ongoing to ensure thorough waste evacuation and environmental cleanliness.

Reaffirming its commitment to improved sanitation, the agency disclosed that the environmental sanitation exercise will now be conducted on a monthly basis. It also highlighted the importance of continuous public awareness and collective responsibility in addressing environmental challenges.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with authorities and adopt proper waste disposal practices as efforts to build a cleaner and healthier Lagos continue.
