EFCC arraigns man for alleged N85.5m land fraud in Enugu

Enugu, Nigeria — May 4, 2026

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Udemba John Chibuzor before Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court sitting in Independence Layout, Enugu, over an alleged N85.5 million land fraud.

The defendant was docked on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence involving the sum of N85,500,000.

According to the charge, Chibuzor allegedly presented himself as the owner of a property known as “Nitel Staff Quarters” located at Zik Avenue, Uwani, Enugu, and fraudulently sold it to a firm, Decent Purch Services & Repairs, despite the property having been previously sold to another ব্যক্তি.

The prosecution stated that the defendant collected N30 million in December 2024 and an additional N55.5 million in January 2025 from the petitioner under false claims of ownership, in violation of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.

Following his plea, counsel to the EFCC, Faruk Abdullah, prayed the court to fix a trial date and remand the defendant in a correctional facility.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to June 3, 2026, for trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded pending the hearing.

Investigations revealed that after receiving the funds, the defendant allegedly became unreachable and was later discovered to have used the same property to defraud other unsuspecting victims.
