FG Mourns Ambassador-Designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele

The Federal Government has announced the passing of Ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who died in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria confirmed that Lele passed away on April 19, 2026. Until his death, he served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division, where he contributed significantly to Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements in the region.

Aged 48, Lele was recently confirmed by the Senate and appointed by President Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s envoy to Algeria, a role he was yet to fully assume before his demise.

Born in Gamawa in 1976, the late diplomat was an Economics graduate of Bayero University Kano. Over the course of his career, he served in various Nigerian missions abroad, including postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

The Ministry described his death as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s foreign service and the nation at large, commending his intellectual depth, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where he paid tribute to the late diplomat, describing him as a hardworking, humble, and dedicated officer.

Ambassador Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Federal Government extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, associates, and the Bauchi State Government, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and the fortitude for all who mourn his passing.
