Abuja, Nigeria — May 5, 2026

Nigeria and the United States of America have inaugurated the Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, aimed at strengthening bilateral efforts to address terrorism, insecurity, and regional instability.

The initiative, led on the Nigerian side by the Armed Forces of Nigeria, is designed to enhance institutional capacity, improve strategic coordination, and support more effective counterterrorism operations.

Speaking at the event, the head of the US delegation, Cate Dave, stated that the working groups would drive strategic planning focused on denying terrorists safe havens and strengthening defence institutions. He emphasised the connection between institutional development and successful security operations.

On his part, the Nigerian delegation team leader, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, highlighted the importance of the partnership in addressing evolving security challenges within Nigeria and across the region.

He noted that key priorities include strengthening warfighting capabilities and improving the responsiveness of the Armed Forces to restore peace and stability nationwide.

Both countries underscored the need for practical outcomes, accountability, and sustained collaboration as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security cooperation and promote regional stability.
