WORKERS WELFARE: TUC HAILS GOVERNMENT WELFARE PACKAGE FOR WORKERS, CALLS FOR REPLICATION AT SUB-NATIONAL
Abuja, Nigeria — April 29, 2026
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has commended the Federal Government for its recent welfare initiatives targeted at improving the living conditions of Nigerian workers, describing the measures as timely and impactful.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where labour leaders reviewed current economic realities and government interventions affecting workers across the country.
The TUC particularly praised the N10 billion housing loan scheme introduced to expand access to affordable home ownership for public servants. According to the union, the initiative represents a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit while also promoting workforce stability and long-term economic security.
The Congress noted that access to decent housing remains a critical factor in enhancing workers’ productivity and overall well-being, urging sustained commitment to policies that directly benefit the labour force.
While applauding the Federal Government’s efforts, the TUC called on state governments to replicate similar welfare packages at the sub-national level to ensure that workers across all tiers of government benefit equitably from such interventions.
In addition, the organised labour advocated for a 50 percent tax reduction for manufacturing industries. The union argued that such a move would help lower production costs, reduce inflationary pressures, and ultimately ease the cost of living for Nigerians while boosting industrial productivity.
Other key issues discussed at the meeting included the need to support local refineries by channeling gains from rising crude oil revenues into the downstream sector. The TUC maintained that strengthening domestic refining capacity would improve access to refined petroleum products and contribute to price stability.
The union reiterated its commitment to engaging with government and other stakeholders to advance policies that protect workers’ rights and promote inclusive economic growth.
