In a recent address, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, underscored the significant threat posed by the misuse of social media, labeling it a top priority for national security both locally and globally.

Ribadu disclosed that the National Security Strategy (NSS) underwent its most recent review in 2015, leading to the introduction of the 2019 edition, which is currently under assessment.
Speaking to a gathering in Abuja comprised of spokespersons from various organizations affiliated with the Strategic Communication Interagency Policy Committee, Ribadu urged media managers within defense, security, and response agencies to adapt their strategies when interacting with the public and combating misinformation propagated by adversaries of the nation.
The NSA stressed the critical role of security sector spokespersons in addressing the manipulation of media and social media platforms aimed at sowing discord between citizens and governments at different levels.
He highlighted the prevalence of false news, incorrect information, and deliberate misinformation as serious risks to national security and public engagement.
Ribadu remarked, “The adept use of social media platforms by those who seek power to shape public opinion against citizens is a global and local threat and presents an immediate national security priority.”
He emphasized the urgency for proactive measures in national security strategic communication management, with spokespersons playing a pivotal role.
“Upon the sweat and blood of service personnel and the men and women who protect us daily, we must build a narrative of resilience and mobilize our people. We must tell their stories and sing their praise as part of a broader national strategic communication program,” Ribadu asserted.
He called on spokespersons to engage in effective governance communication to highlight achievements and reach audiences both domestically and internationally, stressing the need to counter fake news by staying ahead of the news cycle and proactively updating the public.
Ribadu’s remarks underscore the evolving landscape of national security threats in the digital age, where the misuse of social media platforms poses complex challenges that demand proactive and coordinated responses from security agencies and stakeholders.
