Following their arrest for involvement in disruptive cult activities and damaging a police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) at Ekiti State University (EKSU), eight suspected Buccaneer cultists have been remanded by a magistrates’ court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The ruling, delivered by Magistrate A. O. Owoleso, ordered the remand of all defendants at the correctional custody in Ado-Ekiti. The case has been adjourned to May 16 for further proceedings.
The suspects were apprehended amid growing concerns over the prevalence of cult-related violence and disruptions in educational institutions across Nigeria. The incident at EKSU underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to combat cultism and ensure the safety and security of students and staff.
In response to the court’s decision, there have been calls for individuals associated with cult groups to reassess their allegiances and prioritize their legal obligations. The ruling serves as a reminder that individuals will be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their affiliations.
Addressing the issue, authorities have emphasized the importance of dismantling cult networks and prosecuting those responsible for instigating violence and criminal activities. The remand of the suspects signals a firm stance against cultism and underscores the commitment to maintaining law and order within educational institutions.
Additionally, the ruling sends a clear message to individuals involved in cult activities that they will face consequences for their actions. It serves as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in similar behavior, emphasizing the zero-tolerance approach adopted by law enforcement agencies towards cult-related activities.
As the case progresses, stakeholders are urged to support efforts aimed at eradicating cultism from educational institutions and communities. Collaboration between law enforcement agencies, educational authorities, and community leaders is essential in addressing the root causes of cultism and promoting a safe and conducive learning environment for all.
The remand of the eight suspected cultists underscores the determination of the judiciary to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served. It reaffirms the commitment to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining peace and stability in Ekiti State and beyond.
