Lagos, Nigeria – May 30, 2024
In a significant move aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s directive on adopting alternative fuels for official vehicles by 2025, Dangote Cement Plc has announced that it will transition all its cement trucks to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This announcement was made during the 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Dangote Cement Plc held in Lagos.

Speaking to shareholders, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. He also provided updates on the company’s ongoing expansion projects, highlighting the strategic importance of these developments in bolstering Nigeria’s industrial growth and export capabilities.
“We made significant strides in our expansion initiatives, with the successful launch of operations at our 0.45 million tons per annum (Mta) grinding plant in Ghana, increasing our total installed capacity to 52.0 Mta,” Dangote stated. “Furthermore, our 1.5 Mta grinding plant in Côte d’Ivoire is making substantial progress and is nearing completion. Lastly, we have commenced construction on our 6 Mta Itori plant in Ogun State, a crucial step in supporting our ambitious export goals.”
The shift to CNG for cement trucks is a part of Dangote Cement’s broader sustainability strategy. This initiative is expected to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and operational costs while contributing to Nigeria’s environmental goals.
The ongoing construction of the new six million tons per annum (6 Mta) cement plant in Itori, Ogun State, is poised to significantly enhance Dangote Cement’s production capacity. “We are confident that the Itori plant will be completed on time, further strengthening our position as a leader in the cement industry and supporting our goal of increasing exports,” Dangote added.
This commitment to sustainability and expansion comes at a time when the global energy landscape is rapidly evolving, with increased emphasis on renewable and cleaner energy sources. Dangote’s alignment with President Tinubu’s alternative fuel agenda underscores the company’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship and economic growth.
The AGM concluded with a positive outlook for Dangote Cement Plc, as shareholders expressed confidence in the company’s strategic direction and its role in driving Nigeria’s industrial and economic development.
