Lagos, June 7, 2024 — Operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS) apprehended an 18-year-old suspect, Mubarak Abdullahi, for allegedly removing LED road stud lights on the newly renovated Third Mainland Bridge. The arrest took place around 10:00 a.m. today.

Abdullahi, a resident of Makoko, was caught red-handed by RRS operatives while in the process of removing the LED road stud lights, which are screwed into the road to enhance visibility for motorists. At the time of his arrest, the suspect had already removed ten of these essential safety devices.
The swift action by the RRS operatives was part of a broader security initiative. In a proactive move weeks ago, Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, deployed bike riders on a 24-hour security patrol to monitor traffic and safeguard infrastructure on the bridge. This deployment has proven effective, as evidenced by the timely intervention and arrest of the suspect.
The removal of the LED road stud lights posed a significant risk to road safety, particularly during night-time driving. Authorities have underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of such infrastructure to ensure the safety of all road users.
Mubarak Abdullahi is currently in custody, and further investigations are underway to determine if he acted alone or as part of a larger group involved in vandalizing public infrastructure.
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to protecting public property and ensuring the safety of its citizens. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities to help maintain security and prevent such acts of vandalism.
