House Of Representatives Speaker, Abbas Assures Nigerians of Comprehensive Review Of Electoral Act 2022

Abuja, Nigeria — November 19, 2025

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has assured Nigerians that the National Assembly will undertake a comprehensive review of the Electoral Act 2022 to ensure it fully reflects the wishes, aspirations, and expectations of the citizens.

This assurance came as the Speaker responded to an observation raised on the floor of the House by Rep. Ifeanyi Uzokwe, who spoke under a matter of personal explanation, highlighting areas of concern within the current electoral framework.

Speaker Abbas noted that the House is committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy by addressing identified gaps, improving transparency, enhancing credibility of the electoral process, and ensuring that future elections are more efficient and trusted by the electorate. He emphasized that the review process will be thorough, inclusive, and driven by public interest.
Meanwhile, during Tuesday’s plenary session, the House passed for second reading a Constitution alteration bill seeking to reduce the age limit for election into the Senate and the office of Governor. The proposed amendment aims to expand youth participation in governance and further promote inclusiveness in Nigeria’s political leadership.

The deliberations signal the House’s continued commitment to electoral reforms, democratic consolidation, and broad-based political empowerment across the country.
