POLICE ARREST SUSPECT OF IED EXPLOSION IN YENAGOA
Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, February 12, 2026
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 60-year-old man suspected of detonating an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Wednesday within the State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa.
According to the Command, the suspect, identified as Pentecost Elijah from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was apprehended at the scene of the incident.
The arrest followed a swift response by the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, who immediately led the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit, and other tactical teams to the location after receiving reports of the explosion.
Upon arrival, operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit quickly contained the situation and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. During a detailed search of the premises, the team discovered one unexploded IED, which was successfully identified and rendered safe.
The Police Command confirmed that no lives were lost and no property was destroyed as a result of the explosion.
The suspect is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Police authorities stated that upon conclusion of the investigation, he will be charged to court.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, the Command assured residents that the situation is under control and normalcy has been restored.
Members of the public have been advised to remain calm and continue with their lawful business activities while security agencies maintain vigilance across the state.
