Alleged Coup: Military Inaugurates Court-Martial for Trial of Officers

Abuja, Nigeria | April 24, 2026

The Nigerian Armed Forces has inaugurated a General Court-Martial to try officers accused in an alleged coup plot, marking the formal commencement of internal military proceedings.

The accused officers were brought to the venue of the sitting, the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess, at about 8:53 a.m. under tight security. The development underscores the seriousness attached to the case, which has drawn significant public and institutional attention.

Proceedings were held behind closed doors, as journalists were denied access to the courtroom. However, several civil lawyers were seen arriving at the venue ahead of the inauguration, indicating that the defendants are being represented by legal counsel in the course of the trial.

The court-martial signals the beginning of the military’s internal judicial process following months of investigation into the alleged plot. The matter dates back to October 2025, when about 16 serving military personnel, comprising both senior and junior officers, were arrested over alleged acts of indiscipline.

Subsequent investigations by military authorities reportedly revealed that some of the officers had cases to answer relating to an alleged attempt to overthrow the constitutional government. This development led to the decision to subject them to trial before a court-martial.

At the commencement of proceedings, more than 30 accused officers were reportedly brought before the court, suggesting the possibility of expanded charges or additional defendants linked to the case.

The outcome of the trial is expected to provide clarity on the allegations and reinforce the military’s stance on discipline, loyalty, and adherence to constitutional authority.

The inauguration of the court-martial highlights the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to due process in addressing serious allegations within its ranks, while maintaining national security and institutional integrity.
