FG Unveils Bold Education, Skills and Creative Economy Reforms at UniAbuja Dialogue

The Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education system through comprehensive reforms focused on skills development, digital learning, research, and the creative economy.

This position was highlighted during the Renewed Hope Conversations, University of Abuja Edition, where the Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, engaged key stakeholders on strategies to build a future-ready education system aligned with global standards.

According to the Minister, Nigeria is transitioning from a predominantly theory-based education model to one driven by practical skills, innovation, and technology. He emphasized the integration of emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, data science, and other digital technologies into academic curricula, alongside entrepreneurship initiatives designed to promote job creation and economic empowerment.

Dr. Alausa further disclosed that institutions across the country are benefiting from enhanced digital infrastructure, including the deployment of mini-grid power systems, provision of free internet access, and the adoption of modern learning management systems. These efforts are being supported by an ongoing nationwide fibre-optic rollout aimed at improving connectivity and access to digital resources.

In addition, the Federal Government is expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, which have already recorded over 160,000 beneficiaries. The Minister noted that demand for such programmes continues to grow, reflecting increased interest in skill-based education pathways.

He also highlighted key initiatives such as the Student Venture Capital Grant and plans to establish a National Research and Development Fund. These initiatives are expected to support innovation, research commercialization, and the development of sustainable enterprises among Nigerian youths.

The reforms form part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, aimed at equipping young Nigerians with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
