Troops Dismantle IPOB/ESN Stronghold, Recover Suspected Remains of Slain Personnel in Imo State
Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria | April 24, 2026
The Nigerian Army has recorded a major operational success in its ongoing efforts to rid the South East of criminal elements, following the dismantling of a notorious camp linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network in Imo State.
The operation, carried out by troops of the 82 Division in collaboration with other security agencies, took place on April 24, 2026, along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area. It formed part of a coordinated clearance and search mission aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts and recovering the remains of two slain personnel, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
Acting on credible intelligence, troops advanced on the suspected hideout but came under heavy attack from armed elements. In a display of resilience and tactical superiority, the troops engaged the attackers, repelled multiple ambushes, and forced the criminals to retreat.
Following the successful clearance of the camp, a detailed search of the area led to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The graves were carefully excavated, and the suspected remains were recovered.
According to the military, the remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA analysis, to confirm their identities. Efforts are also underway to liaise with the families of the deceased to ensure proper identification and facilitate dignified burial arrangements.
The operation highlights the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to bringing perpetrators of violence to justice and honouring fallen heroes. It also underscores the sustained degradation of IPOB/ESN networks and infrastructure across the South East.
The discovery of the graves within the camp further exposes the brutality of the group and its disregard for human life, reinforcing the need for continued security operations in the region.
The Nigerian Army reassured the public that operations will persist until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace is restored. It also called on law-abiding citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
The military reiterated its resolve to remain professional and steadfast in defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria.
